Concept Introduction:

What is Dynamic Assessment and why would you do it?

  • In short, DA is a way to examine how a person learns when taught, rather than simply what they know.
  • It gives us a way to more accurately identify how a student learns, retains, and transfers new information.
  • You would want to use DA as part of a comprehensive language evaluation, particularly for evaluations of culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
  • The information gleaned from a DA can be used as converging evidence when making clinical decisions.

Course 1: Overview of Dynamic Assessment
This course provides an introduction and rationale to the application of dynamic assessment in speech-pathology clinical practice. Participants will explore key concepts of dynamic assessment (e.g., test-teach-retest, mediated learning, and zone of proximal development), and examine not only how dynamic assessment fits within the scope of practice, but also how it is supported by the Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and peer-reviewed research.
